DVD Review: Back in time to save the future

This latest instalment takes us back in time as the <i>X-Men</i> try to stop their kind being exterminated by the Sentinel robots.

I am a big fan of Marvel characters like Thor, Iron Man and Hulk, but I have never really been bitten by the X-Men bug.

Until now.

Following on from the heavily criticised X-Men: First Class, Days of Future Past returns the X-Men to their pedestal of high-action superhero excitement.

This latest instalment takes us back in time as the X-Men try to stop their kind being exterminated by the Sentinel robots.

They track back to 50 years earlier, when human scientists used the DNA of the shape-changing Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) to create a robot with extraordinary powers to identify and kill mutants.

Logan/Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) agrees to let Kitty Pryde send his consciousness back in time so he can guide the younger X-Men into stopping Raven/Mystique from getting caught and so protect their people into the future.

But it isn't going to be easy.

Raven sees Sentinels inventor Dr Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage) as the ultimate enemy - and she is determined to kill him.

Logan must also get the younger Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Erik Lensherr/Magneto (Michael Fassbender) to work together and use their powers to stop Raven. And so the X-Men magic and incredible powers come to the fore.

X-Men: Days of Future Past resurrects the franchise to the top of its game. It combines a great storyline with plenty of action and drama and leaves fans, new and old, wanting for more.
