Dewy skin can be achieved at home.

Dewy skin can be achieved at home.

A change in season inevitably brings a change in makeup trends - particularly for foundation, as colder weather often causes skin types and shades to alter slightly.

Fashion weeks around the world also give us an indication of what foundation finishes may be picked up in the coming seasons.

While we previously saw a strong focus on matte complexions, last season saw a rise in dewy complexions - the word "sweaty" being used at Marc by Marc Jacobs and Missoni.

Maybelline New York's New Zealand makeup artist Julia O'Neil lets us into some of her sercets.

WHAT FACE TRENDS CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE THIS AUTUMN/ WINTER?

During recent fashion weeks we saw a trend of luminous foundation finishes, so this autumn we expect to see more women wearing dewy foundation. There will also be a focus on metallic makeup and bold graphic liner in a range of colours.

HOW CAN WE ACHIEVE A SIMILAR LUMINOUS LOOK AT HOME?

Always prep the skin with moisturiser and primer, and then apply a liquid foundation with a dewy finish, such as Maybelline New York Fit Me Foundation. Draw a triangle from your eye downwards and up to your cheekbones with a highlighting concealer to cover any under-eye circles, and then apply a powder highlighter across the tops of the cheekbones. I love Maybelline New York Master Hi-light blushers and bronzers - a finely milled formula that gives a soft sheen and adds natural warmth to the skin - perfect for winter!

WHAT SKIN CONCERNS DO WOMEN FACE DURING WINTER AND WHAT FOUNDATION FORMULAS SHOULD THEY CHOOSE TO COMBAT THESE?

The wind, cold weather and dry indoor heating can often result in dry skin that lacks lustre. An easy way to combat this is to switch to a more nourishing lightweight foundation, such as Maybelline New York's Dream Fresh BB Cream. Steer clear of matte or heavy formulas as they can exacerbate dry skin.

ANY OTHER TIPS TO KEEP SKIN LOOKING GOOD THIS WINTER AND HOW TO PROTECT OUR MAKEUP AGAINST THE ELEMENTS?

The key is to constantly reassess your skin care regime to suit the skin you have now, which often means using richer moisturisers or an extra hydrating serum during winter.

If you find your foundation is grabbing and not blending well onto dry patches, try spritzing a moisturising toner or rosewater before applying makeup for extra moisture.

If your skin has lost its glow during the day, try tapping on a portable cream blush to the cheeks and blend upwards. I wear Maybelline New York Face Studio Master Glaze Blush Stick which offers a dewy shine and is infused with shimmer pearls and shea butter.

Lips can also take a hammering in winter so always keep them moisturised with a lip balm, and avoid drying matte or longwearing lipsticks.

I love Maybelline New York Color Sensational The Elixir because they have the care of a balm, the saturated colour of a lipstick and the shine of a gloss.
