I had planned to write this week about my excitement that a new Foo Fighters album and concert tour had been launched.

One of the better songs on the CD is called Something From Nothing (charting the birth of the music scene in Chicago) and it occurred to me that, in a lot of cases, strategic planning is the key tool to ensure that "something" can be created to succeed and be sustained.

Which brings me to one of the most satisfying moments since Zenith Group was formed five years ago. Last Thursday our client Skin Elegance.com launched its American website - something which was just an idea a year ago.

This has been a project where every facet of our group played a part.

It started last November when I facilitated strategic planning workshops with its owner and managers. What started as a one-day workshop spanned a weekend as the complexities of establishing a business in Los Angeles required precise planning.

The time invested paid dividends because the resulting plan plotted a course to the successful launch and quick acquisition of significant corporate and retail clients.

A marketing strategy was formulated by Zenith Marketing and Design and, importantly, it fit the wider strategic direction like a glove. From there Katy Beadle and Des Bovey, both of whom we are privileged to work with, developed outstanding designs and brands for both the website and a future concept store - right down to the look and feel of the store which will be launched in California in 2016.

I've written before on how important branding is, and how you must also target your marketing to meet your market. It is also just as important to have professionals assisting you in getting this right.

Our team worked to provide the highest quality solution for the client. This included managing the development of the website with a third party - the final piece in this marketing story.

Chartered accountant Mel Loader was also involved managing the finances of the New Zealand parent company.

This is the power of having available skills and expertise locally in one place - an informal collective of out-of-towners cannot truly create the synergies and effectiveness of having everything you need under one roof.

This piece of work has proven the power that comes with an effective strategic plan which has undergone a robust process. There were some material issues which needed to be dealt with and complexities which required the right answers.

I'm proud that we managed these and we have a client developing a presence in the world's largest cosmetic market.

And we couldn't have done it without technology as the strategic plan is maintained via regular "video meetings" - further proof that, with the support of digital initiatives, Wanganui is a fantastic place to do business, no matter where that business resides.
