ADVICE: Steve Baron is helping Whanganui businesses - for free.

A local politics campaigner is seeking to improve business outcomes in Whanganui.
Steve Baron stood for Whanganui District Council in October, gaining 5174 votes which was not enough to win a seat on council.

He has now set up a free marketing advisory service for small to medium-sized companies in the district.

His knowledge and experience stems from previously running his own business, Baron Marketing Ltd.

He said there were a lot of small businesses that did not know much about advertising and marketing.

"If we can make just one more business successful, then that helps improve economic development and helps everyone in Whanganui," he said.

He said his services were free because "this is my way of giving back to the town that gave me a start in life".

Mr Baron is currently working with four local companies, including Simply Whiter Teeth, Technoman Computer Store and The Grand Hotel.

"We sit down and make a plan to attract new customers under online advertising."

He said online advertising created a wider audience and was an important part of business growth.
