Jennie Harris loves babies and young children and for the last three years has made a living at home by sewing clothes for them.
Her Baby Originals business is based in her Muir St house in the Wanganui suburb of Gonville. She does the sewing in her garage, with an
overlocker, a cover stitch machine, a binder and a plain sewer. The clothes are for children from birth to four years old, mainly made out of merino and organic cotton fabric woven in New Zealand. She makes all her own patterns.
"It's all quality work. It's not thrown together. It's good stuff," she said.
She sells to retail shops and at the River Traders' market every Saturday, and also from a small shop at the front of her house. Many of her buyers are grandparents.
She said going to the market was hard work, but it was good for publicity and a convenient place for customers.
