The Rutland Arms inn is an iconic pub in Wanganui and its new owners, Tavis Small and Jennifer Gilbertson-Small, mean to keep it that way.
Born and bred in Wanganui, the couple, as holders of bachelor degrees in hospitality and management, are glad to be contributing to Wanganui's growing economy with 15 years' industry experience behind them.
The Wanganui couple understood from the start that taking ownership of the Rutland Arms was not a completely new project but a chance to improve on a working formula.
"The clientele at the Rutland are very loyal and really value the kind of service we offer here. People come here for a specific experience which we are proud to give them, so we won't be changing much."
They said they would be extending the beer menu to include more boutique-style beers from local New Zealand breweries. This is something they believe will appeal to their customers who drink for pleasure rather than intoxication. "The key is to find the balance between quality and value, we want to offer something that's a little bit different but affordable too."
As long time friends of the previous owner, the couple had an eye on the pub before it went on the market and saw it as a great opportunity to pursue a local family business.
"It was a real smooth transition as we go a long way back with Mike, so he showed us the ins and outs of the place. We love the supportive business environment in Wanganui"
They said that although running a restaurant and hotel was a new experience, their staff had made it easy for them being so supportive while they settled in.
"We are really grateful to have such a wonderful team working with us, they practically ran the place while we got our eyes in."
This was very important to the couple, who have two small children.
"We want the kids to be involved in the life of the pub, it's a family business and the staff have been brilliant with them."
