YMCA's breakaway programme to return for Easter

YMCA Whanganui's Breakaway programme has wrapped up for another summer but registrations for the Easter holidays are already open.

The free school holiday programme for 11-17-year-olds ran for four weeks over and had about 50 participants on the books.

Activities included trips to Bushy Park, the Whanganui East Pool and Palmerston North with all activities and food provided for free.

"I guess it keeps young people active over the holidays," youth work coordinator Tony Sundman said.

"It's such a wide variety of people as well. They all come from different backgrounds so they are all there for different reasons, I guess."

Mr Sundman said the programme also offered prizes which were donated by the community.

"It's all peer nominated too, so you're nominated by your friends."

Breakaway buddy of the season went to Jacob Wiley who won a 20 minute flight with the Wanganui Aero Club for being "an outstanding team player".

"He got that for being very supportive, helping out all the time, doing chores and being supportive of his peers," Mr Sundman said.

Registrations for the Easter holiday programme are open now at the YMCA on Grey St.
