A stolen car was destroyed after it was hit by a train on the Aramoho Rail Bridge.

A train has hit an unoccupied car on the Aramoho Rail Bridge.

The collision occurred about 4.45am on Friday on the Whanganui East side of the bridge. The car, which was stolen, was driven onto the tracks before being abandoned.

A police spokeswoman said there were no injuries and the car was removed around 7.50am. Police are investigating.
