January 2017 will see Whanganui host Palmerston North-based Centrepoint Theatre's successful Summer School youth drama programme.

It will be held at Whanganui Girls' College, from January 23 to 27.

The theatre's artistic director Jeff Kingsford-Brown said the week-long intensive drama workshop was aimed at 13-18 year olds and would be led by Toi Whakaari graduate, actor and dancer Ria Simmons, and various guest tutors.

"Summer School is a popular and exciting initiative led by trained practitioners, designed to give aspiring performers an introduction to some of the essentials for professional theatre," Mr Kingsford-Brown said.

"Participants try their hands at a range of fun and exciting theatre skills, from musical theatre, movement and singing to stage combat and acting for stage and camera.

"The school is a great introduction into theatre training for those drama-mad kids out there, and sure to be a memorable and hugely enjoyable way to round off the summer holidays," he said.

Places are limited to 20 students and registration is crucial to secure a place. Registrations close on Sunday December 18, 2016. Cost is $250 per person.
