Being escorted past Kai Iwi Beach by a pod of dolphins was "really cool" for a Whanganui man up early on Monday morning and out on a jetski.
Rob Chamberlain took the jetski out on water unusually calm for the time of year. In a three-hour fishing session he caught seven snapper and nine gurnard.
He also hooked some sharks, including a carpet shark about 1.2m long, which he released.
He wasn't the only one fishing on Monday. The car park at Whanganui's Wharf St Slipway was nearly full of vehicles that tow fishing boats.
Fishers in a second boat returning at the same time said they caught a few blue cod and a couple of gurnard, but were hassled by spiny dog fish sharks.
