One lucky Whanganui resident has a winning Lotto ticket sitting in their glovebox, drawer or wallet.

A $10,000-winning ticket bought from Trafalgar Lotto for the January 2 draw has yet to be claimed, and Lotto is urging anyone who has bought a ticket there to get it checked - you might be sitting on a winner.

The ticket was bought as part of the Christmas promotion, and the player has until January 2, 2017, to claim the prize.

Lotto spokeswoman Emilia Mazur said players should write their name and address on the back of the ticket and check it at a local Lotto outlet, online at MyLotto.co.nz, or through the Lotto NZ ticket-checking app.

There were 36 major unclaimed Lotto prizes around the country, including an $800,000 ticket bought from Pak 'n Save Pukekohe, and four $500,000 prizes bought in Auckland, Wellington, Palmerston North and Dunedin. A $22 million prize was won by an Ashburton couple in April - the biggest windfall of the year.
