The Northland Trail Riding Club is having another ride in the Aupouri Forest on Sunday, October 21, starting from the DOC headquarters as per the last ride.
The club's new summer season of events and activities opened with a Sunday ride in the Waitangi Forest at the end of September, with a field of 42 riders taking part. The Aupouri Forest course will be held in a similar fashion, on a marked trail course with horses and riders leaving at set intervals. The terrain for this upcoming ride was described as soft forestry tracks and roads, and some beach riding. There will be three classes on the day, novice A, a 15km distance taking riders around 2 hours 15 minutes; novice B, a 25km distance estimated to tak 3 hours; and intermediate, a 25km distance estimated to take riders around 2 hours 30 minutes. Placings will be awarded by adding the horses' heart rates to any time faults, with the lowest score winning.
The club advised each rider must have two buckets and water for washing down and drinking etc, while riders aged 15 and under are to be accompanied by an adult.
Registration for the October 21 trail ride will be from 8am to 9.30am, and the event expected to get under way between 10 and 11am, wet or fine. The hosting club reminded its motto was, "Have fun and enjoy the experience."
