Several junior teams from the Mid North travelled to Waipapakauri on Saturday to play their counterparts from the Far North as part of the curtain-raising entertainment before a crucial Northland senior league clash.
The Muriwhenua Falcons junior rugby league teams hosted Tautoro and Whanau in under-11 games, noted Tautoro spokespersonTracey Albert. She went on to thank the Falcons junior players for the "mean hard game but Tautoro just wanted it a little more", suggesting victory went in the visitors' favour.
Whanau under-11s also played the Falcons before the round 18 senior clash between Muriwhenua and City Knights from Otangarei took place in fine conditions that afternoon.
"What a game to watch!" Albert said of the narrow 18-20 win by the visiting Knights, which was a bit of an upset.
On behalf of the Tautoro Rugby League Club, Albert thanked all those who have played for the club this year, the whanau and supporters, along with the Tautoro marae, and the local primary school for hosting games last month.
Thanks also went to the coaches for putting in their time to share their knowledge of the game with the local tamariki (children); and also to the many teams Tautoro have faced during the season so far.
All those mentioned above had played a part in "keeping league alive up here".
