Once again the sparkling sands and sea of Tokerau Beach provided the backdrop for everyone who participated in the Auahi Kore Whanau Duathlon in Whatuwhiwhi on September 1.
Event spokesperson Rikki Rolleston said organisers noted the tamariki [children] began the day in this annual walk/run and cycle event, andit was great to see parents supporting the youngsters throughout the day.
Some ran or biked beside them along the course route.
"There has definitely been an increase in adult participants wanting to do the longer course option."
One of the comments received was, 'This course is harder than the Iron Maori one in Napier,' mainly due to the hills and battling the winds along Tokerau Beach Rd.
Rolleston noted their has been a core group of whanau from Whatuwhiwhi who not only completed this local duathlon event but will be part of the Iron Maori group already at an estimated 80 members who will complete a 2km swim, 90km bike and 21km walk/run in December.
"Participating and training together is one of the keys to keeping each other motivated, inspired and enjoying physical activity."
On behalf of event organisers, Rolleston thanked all the marshalls and traffic management on the day, Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Rangiawhia, the Karikari Fire Brigade and the Haititaimarangai Marae for their support.
Te Hauora O Te Hiku O Te Ika within their Korikori a Iwi service advised it was always looking to provide activities and programmes to help whanau and community become more physically active.
