A record number of entries contested the annual Kerikeri New World Junior Netball Tournament in Kerikeri on Sunday, June 23, with the event featuring a number of local teams and also attracting sides from as far away as Kaitaia in the north to Auckland in the south.
Event spokesperson Sue Devaliant said all the games were played in great spirit.
"It was awesome to see our year 4s, 5s, 6s, 7s and 8s players gaining tournament experience within our local centre.
"As the day's games progressed the atmosphere at the centre was tense heading into semis and finals," she said, adding the rain stayed away until just before the end of the tournament. The day's inclement winter weather conditions were unable to prevent some great netball from taking place.
On behalf of the hosts, the Kerikeri Netball Centre, Devaliant gave many thanks to the participating teams' management for organising their players to attend, gave a special mention to this year's sponsors, Ros from St Johns Kerikeri for volunteering her time during the tournament and said the Kerikeri Netball Leadership group supplied "yummy food" during the day.
Results from the finals of the 2013 Kerikeri New World junior tournament were:
Year 4: Mangawai beat Oturu Titans, Year 5: Pirates beat Dream Team, Year 6: Whau Valley School beat Tree Trimmers, Year 7: WIS Gold beat Dangerous Divas, Year 8: Rangimarie beat WIS Silver.
