Whangaroa College reported its sports programme had really started to gather some momentum.
School spokesperson Sharyn Van Heerden said the goals for the first year are to establish our school sports programme, one which will not only get the students involved in a variety of sports, but will set themup to compete in these sports at a level that will allow them to confidently compete and win in local and regional events.
She went on to note the two boys' basketball teams competed at the inaugural Slam Zone Secondary All-Stars invitational basketball tournament on July 31, and acquitted themselves well.
The juniors beat a Kaikohe kura [school] squad and also had another couple of close games. The senior boys' team made the final against Kamo High, who have been together for a number of years and are one of the top Northland schools.
"The boys did a great job and the experience will be invaluable heading onto the NSSSA tournament later this month."
In other sporting news, student Aroha Heta still leads the NSSSA clay target shooting standings after her performance in leg 4 of the series, held at Dargaville and featuring a good representation of Northland secondary schools.
The fifth and final leg in the series will be in Whangarei next month.
Upcoming sporting events at Whangaroa College include the Slam Zone basketball competition through to mid September, while the Rippa Rugby recommenced last Wednesday ).
