The running of the first hoop of the new summer for the Kaitaia Croquet Club was made in great style by local businessman, Monty Knight.
The club's report from the day's proceedings noted Monty ran the hoop at his first attempt to riotous cheers from clubmembers then, egged on by the enthusiasm, repeated the exercise from a longer distance allowing the host club to declare the season officially open.
Following the ceremony, Monty and his partner joined club members, along with local sportsbuster Francis Malley there with his 3-year-old daughter Cheleyna to record the opening moment, to enjoy a sumptuous spread of savouries and cakes in the clubrooms.
The introduction of Ricochet as another croquet alternative was not the success anticipated as there had been no opportunity to practice this prior to opening day. With three large lawns set up (rather than six small) it was difficult for 22 people to play the new version. As the weather turned dark and cold and rain threatened, it was decided to forego outside activities and return to the shelter of the clubrooms for the next part of the day's proceedings.
Inside and on behalf of the club, president Dorothy Donaldson farewelled Kaitaia croquet stalwarts Eric and Margaret Manning who have decided to relocate to Whangarei after 37 years in the Far North.
Both Eric and Margaret have been involved in just about every aspect of croquet for the past 14 years. Eric, as district referee, will join a Whangarei club but Margaret, who is taking a break from the game, said she will remain as a member of the Kaitaia club.
Both were overwhelmed by the very kind words and by the gifts presented. All present won something in the raffle sponsored by the local supermarket which whetted appetites for a splendid afternoon tea.
