The Moerewa under-13s emerged with the 2013 Bay of Islands under-13 rugby championship after their 22-17 win over Kaeo in the Bay J&T; competition's grand final in Kaeo on Saturday.

Kaeo scored first, with Moerewa replying and eventually going into the break leading 17-12. Kaeo scored soon after and the game was locked at 17-all with great defence from both sides stemming all attacks.

With 10 minutes to go, Moerewa finally broke through and scored with a try by fullback Bayleigh Bentley Hape, his second of the game.

Moerewa's defence held strong until the end, stopping a wave of attackss from Kaeo in the final minutes, to win.

Other try scorers for Moerewa were Damien Renata and Troy Hona. This made two grand final victories in two weeks for the Moerewa Rugby Club following the senior men's team taking out the Bay of Islands premiers competition over Kerikeri at the end of July.
