SQUASH

Seventy-two squash players from Auckland to Kaitaia travelled to the Far North to contest various divisions in the Kerikeri Open held over the weekend of July 26-28, the final tournament in the Harrow/ Northland Racket Shop senior player series.

As expected, with the tournament on their doorstep, a strong contingent of 14 players from the neighbouring club in Kaitaia were rallied by local Nirelle McDonald and eventually returned home with three division winners and two runnerups, while various other players came to the prize table in their respective divisions. McDonald beat a spirited Vicki Ferguson in her final.

The main highlight in the tournament saw Max Trimble win the men's open division by beating the defending champion Mal McBain in an intensely-contested final which went all the way into a fifth set. It was, a commentator noted, another string to Trimble's laudable bow, having just won the under-17 North and South Island age groups championships.

Elsewhere, a fall on court denied No1 seed Sacha Pou Tito the ladies title leaving the race open to second seed, Fiona Moselen. Both Moselen and Trimble will be competing in the senior nationals this weekend and then will feature in the senior team representing Northland from August 5-6 on completion of the individuals.

Back in Kerikeri last month, all participants enjoyed a sumptuous meal on Saturday night. And, while the Kerikeri event concluded the senior player series, there are plenty more tournaments in Northland still to be played in 2013.

"At the end of the day, squash was the winner from the juniors to the seniors all competing and enjoying the spirit of the game."
