Thirteen students from Kaikohe East School headed to Narrowneck Beach on Auckland's North Shore where they featured in a field of more than 2200 children participating in the Kiwi Kids Weet-Bix Kids Tryathlon on May 14.
It was the second consecutive year that the school's students were given the opportunityto take part in the event, having been encouraged and organised by teacher Rebecca Croucher who said it was great to see the children rise to the challenge and put their hand up.
"Not all who entered were the athletic types but their enthusiasm and dedication to keep training and give it a go is what made them succeed. It was great to see them smile as they crossed the finish line to receive a gold medal. It is at this point they realised they could really do it, that their effort and determination had paid off," said Rebecca, noting all the children spent their lunchtimes leading up to the event preparing hard with Anne "Top Trainer" Stillwell, another teacher from the school.
