The Far North turned on a fine mid-winter's day for the inaugural Tumatahina Try-athlon at Te Hapua which was successfully completed on Sunday, July 7, by participants ranging in age from six-years-old to over 60.
Event spokesperson Frances Harris noted the day began warm and still for both supporters andparticipants who had turned out in force at Cape Reinga.
The cyclists were sent off with a moemiti [prayer of thanks] from elder Pineaha Murray and rode to the turnoff to begin the run/walk into Te Hapua.
"It was truly a family fun day. All participants were over the finish line by 1pm followed by a lovely meal and prize giving," she said, adding thanks on behalf of the organisers, to all those who worked behind the scenes. She also gave a special thanks to the numerous sponsors who got in behind the event which included local businesses and trusts, and also the Whakawhiti Ora Pai nurses for their support.
"We are looking at making this an annual event," she said.
