A local fishing club will host the regional distance surfcasting competition in Kaitaia this Saturday.

The NZACA Casting Day Reginals taking place at a venue just past the old timber mill on Pukepoto Rd are being hosted by the 90 Mile Beach Surfcasting Club from 9am.

West coast fishing reporter Jack Rogers advised some of New Zealand's top distance casters will be on show and anyone was welcome to attend to watch or join the casting competition with a free entry.

Paul Summers and Peter Froggett will represent the host club.

The following day, Sunday (January 6) sees the 90 Mile Beach club holding its first field day for the new year with fishing from 7am-2pm over a 10.35am low tide.

This is a registration day in conjunction with the Riders Trophy tournament and features a major mystery weight prize with the fish species and weight chosen by event sponsor, Mike Rider. There will be a barbecue along with prizegiving at the club caravan.

In other recent news, the club held its final field day of 2012 where the final outcome did not alter the points board. The winners for the fishing year were, King: Milton Arnold; Queen: Jo Arthur, Junior: Jayden Rogers.

Rogers noted rollercoaster sea conditions greeted members at the popular Picnic Fieldday competition, which concluded the 2012 calendar year (which previously used to finish in July).
