The Bay of Islands College senior girls team won Northland Secondary School title last Wednesday, taking out a much taller Kaitaia side 27-24 in the final.
The college's sports coordinator Dave Scott noted the game was a "classic contest of speed versus height", while the side began the day withthree very good wins in section play over Okaihau, Northland and Ruawai colleges followed by a convincing semi-final victory over Rodney to progress into the final.
It was Bay College's first Northland title in five years and with most of the girls returning next year, it was looking like the team to beat in 2013. Helping the cause were several Year 10 students who really stepped up to contribute to the team's success; they will also get their chance at a Northland title this week at Kensington.
The result was also regarded as a good build up before the Upper North Island Championships in Auckland in a couple of weeks' time; as the side prepares to wrap up its domestic campaign in the senior league of the Bay of Islands Netball Centre's competition in Kaikohe on Saturdays.
In other college sports news, Bay College defeated Tikipunga 5-2, Keegan Harrison leading the way with a hat-trick, to finish fifth overall in Division 1 of the NSSSA midweek football earlier this month. The Bay College girls team didn't quite fare as well after leading Whangarei Girls High 2-1 at half time but eventually going down 5-2 to a more determined team.
Also, the Adam Blair 1st XIII secondary school rugby league competition got underway earlier this month and saw Bay College travel to play Kaitaia in what ended up being a tremendous game. Bay proving slightly better on the day by beating the home side 30-28 to open its campaign account. Bay College hosts Northland College tomorrow.
