It will be some time yet before anyone knows if Rachael Toia was right when she suggested that a future Silver Fern or two might have been amongst the children who welcomed her to Peria School last week, but while the netball skills have yet to be learned there was no shortage of enthusiasm.

ANZ Bank Kaitaia manager, Ms Toia was there to present a large box containing half a dozen balls, court markers, bibs (in Peria's colour - orange), an inflation kit and a timer.

The equipment handed over provided everything the school needs to deck out a netball team, and perhaps launch an inter-school competition.

The gift was part of the ANZ netball grant scheme, which this year will see $100,000 worth of gear given to schools, social teams and fans around the country.

Peria School parent (and now netball coach) Rebecca Maria applied for the grant, saying last week that she hoped it would help kick-start a competition.

The plan was to involve teams of five- to eight-year-olds at Peria, Mangonui, Oruaiti and Kaingaroa schools, the only alternative for would-be Peria players being to make an 80-minute round trip to Kaitaia and back on Saturday mornings.

That was a bit much for the smaller children, Mrs Maria said, but a four-school competition would be good value.

The problem was that while the school had a court with a goal at each end it didn't have a lot of gear, a problem that has now well and truly been resolved.
