Former Prime Minister Helen Clark has been recognised by Zonta in the past.

Zonta New Zealand has continued its celebration of 125 years of women's suffrage by opening nominations for its Zonta New Zealand Women of Achievement 2019 awards.

Souella Cumming, Governor of Zonta New Zealand, said in 2016 the organisation had recognised the contributions of 50 women towards to the empowerment of women and girls within New Zealand and globally. They ranged from household names to "quiet achievers," including former Prime Ministers Helen Clarke and Dame Jenny Shipley, Dr Marilyn Waring, Heather Henare, Dame Margaret Sparrow, Cherry Raymond, Dr Farah Palmer, Holly Mathieson, Sharmila Pathak, Lesley Elliot and Louise Nicholas.

As Zonta International prepared to celebrate its centennial next year, it was bringing together women around the world who were working together in their communities to empower the lives of women and girls.

" Zonta New Zealand wants to recognise the achievements of a further 50 women in this country for this special centennial anniversary," Ms Cumming said. "We invite the community to get behind the inspirational women in our lives and nominate them, to celebrate their contribution to empowering women in New Zealand who are making a difference to the lives of other women.

Nominations, on the form at www.zonta.org.nz (under awards), can be made directly to the awards committee (zontawoa@outlook.co.nz), or via any of 28 Zonta clubs around the country.
