There was no warrant for his arrest at that time.
The short chase that ensued ended on Duncan Road, Walker abandoning his four-wheel-drive, grabbing what appeared to be a rifle off the passenger seat and fleeing.
He was described from the start as well known to police, resident in the Kaingaroa area and an experienced hunter with good knowledge of the terrain.
Police said last week that this was "purely a police versus offender confrontation" and that no fears were held for public safety.
Although he has close links to Kaitaia, police now believe Walker could have travelled outside the area, and further afield than Northland.
As of yesterday afternoon extensive inquiries had failed to locate him, or to persuade him to give himself up.
"It's important we find Walker, and we urge him to get in touch with us so that this matter is resolved," Detective Sergeant Trevor Beatson (Kaitaia) said yesterday.
Duncan Road was cordoned off shortly after Walker disappeared and the Armed Offenders' Squad, along with a dog and handler, were choppered in to assist.
Police encourage anyone who sees Walker, or who has information on where he might be, to call the Kaitaia station on 408-6500 without delay, or 111. Information may also be given, anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555-111.
