Vintage and classic cars will be out and about in numbers on Sunday, in the Far North and elsewhere, doing their bit for Daffodil Day.
Following what the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand described as the unprecedented success of the 2017 rally, hundreds of vehicles will take to theroad again to raise money for the Cancer Society's annual appeal.
The Daffodil Rally for Cancer was a simple concept with big returns according to president Diane Quarrie, and anyone, in any vehicle, would be welcome to join in.
"We will charge a small entry free, with all the proceeds going to the local Cancer Society," she said.
"Last year we raised over $40,000, double what we expected, and we're looking to build on that success for 2018. Our members love being out in their vintage and classic vehicles, and the Daffodil Rally for Cancer is a great way for us to give back to the community."
Cancer Society CEO Mike Kernaghan said his organisation had been "blown away" by the funds raised last year, and was receiving fantastic support from vintage car clubs across the country again this year.
"Over the years vintage car clubs have delivered fresh daffodils and collected for us, but this year, to have multiple rallies around the country, is fantastic," he said.
"Donations and money raised will go towards a range of support services, information booklets, vital research and health promotion activities."
The Far North Vintage Car Club will actually stage two rallies, one starting at Te Ahu in Kaitaia and the other at the Waipapa shopping centre, both starting at 1pm and both ending at Matthews' Vintage Collection on SH10 at Aurere.
The $10 per person entry fee ($5 for children) will cover entry to the museum, which will fire up a 1905 stationary engine and other old machines, with afternoon tea in return for a donation.
Neither rally will take a direct route to their destination, both covering about 40km of sealed and unsealed roads.
