Two people are trapped after a serious crash which has closed a road in Whangarei.

A police spokesman said emergency services were called to the scene between Whangarei Heads and Grahamtown roads in Onerahi at 1.08pm.

A 111 caller told police two cars and a ute were involved.

Police have cordoned off the road.

Fire and Emergency northern region communications shift manager Megan Ruru said two people were trapped in their cars and crew were working to free them.

Police and ambulance were in attendance after receiving a call shortly after 1pm.

She wasn't sure if anybody was injured.

"All we're worried about is getting people out."
