Three people have been hurt - two seriously - after two cars collided on State Highway 1 in the Hokianga area of the Far North.

A police spokesman said the collision occurred between Perry and Rangiahua roads, north of Rangiahua bridge and roughly midway between Okaihau and Mangamuka, just before 7pm on Friday.

St John Ambulance could not be contacted, but according to a tweet they took three patients to Bay of Islands Hospital In Kawakawa.

Two were in a serious condition and a third had minor injuries.
