2013 SOCIAL GRADE WINNERS: Kaikohekohe Blue.

2013 SOCIAL GRADE WINNERS: Kaikohekohe Blue.

In October 2013 a rejuvenated Touch Kaikohe committee organised and ran Northland's premier touch competition, which catered to nine open mixed and six social mixed teams and junior teams, as well as a Kaikohe module. Both competitions combined attracted over 500 players to Kaikohe every Thursday for the 10-week season.

The 2013 competition was the tightest competition in years, with six teams all in contention come finals time.

The semis saw former winners Showstoppers take on 2012 champions Dark Assailants. Although Showstoppers came into some excellent form late in the season they weren't strong enough to hold off an undermanned Dark Assailants. Former two-time champions Trust Us faced a tough Kawakawa-based Wha Out. Trust Us prevailed in a tough match to create a rematch of the 2012 final, with the Trust Us team winning the final convincingly over an underpowered Dark Assailants.

The awards received last year were; open champions: Trust Us, social champions: Kaikohekohe Blue, MVP male: Reagan Hills, MVP female: Alicia Proctor; Most promising new talent: Rongo Paniora, Up and Coming Referee: Johnny Cooper; Fair Play Team of the Year: Wha Out.

This year promises to build on the success of last year and registrations are now open.

As well as offering teams the opportunity to play, there is also a chance for players to gain coaching and refereeing qualifications.

Initial rally nights are set to kick off this Thursday (October 2) at 5.30pm with the season's opening-day tournament at Lindvart Park Kaikohe on Saturday October 18. The tournament will offer mixed and men's grades and the opportunity to take home prizemoney.

The Touch Kaikohe Module will start on Thursday October 23 and will take registrations for Social Mixed and Open Mixed Grades.
