Fishing a 24-hour field day traditionally produces good catches and the most recent overnight 90 Mile Beach Club contest last month proved no exception.
A total of 41 club members and three visitors took part in the JNL/ A Fred Plate Field Day, fished from Saturday into Sunday (April 14-15),and weighed in a total of 120 snapper, 19 kahawai, and eight trevally. A report from the club noted that considering only five fish per angler could be weighed in for the event, this made for a lot of fish.
Roger Hall had his day of glory after weighing in the heaviest snapper at 8.35kg — plus another of 7.82kg along with a further two over 6kg — to claim first place overall as well as the A Fred Plate with a personal tally of 33.40kg snapper.
Second place with the heaviest trevally went to Roy Langford with 3.78kg, while third for heaviest kahawai was Miko Rogers with 2.34kg. Other placegetters were, Stephen Beckett 7.90kg snapper 4 (4th), Dan Lloyd 3.74kg trevally 5, Dave Hallett 1.73kg kahawai 6, Kelly Strong (new member) 6.99kg snapper 7, Mark Frost 3.40kg trevally 8, Oscar Parlour (junior) 1.63kg kahawai 9, and Dan Needham 6.80kg snapper 10.
Langford also took out the haggle of 3.85 kg with his 3.86kg snapper while winners of sponsored fishing reels were Hallett, Milton Arnold and Jo Arthur.
Organisers gave a big thank you to the event sponsors for their continuous support of the club and its field days, and the Rogers whanau for cooking a much appreciated barbecue.
* The club's next field day will be held this Sunday, the 90 Mile Park Field Day where the Far North Sports Link Trophy (for the heaviest trevally) is up for grabs. The event will be fished from 9am to 4pm over a 2.8m tide high at 1.33pm. Contact Jack Rogers 408-2660.
