The Far North Country Music and Variety Club has staged a highly successful fundraising concert on behalf of the Northland Emergency Services Trust (NEST), which operates Northland's rescue helicopters, doubling as a tribute to much-loved club member Sam Hobson, his wife Jennifer, daughter Kim and grandchildren Liam, Neve and Cora Hobson-Scott.

Sam lost his life on April 27 in a tractor accident at his home at Paparore.

Prior to the event buckets were distributed around the community for filling, club members filling more of their own. They were then delivered to the Kaitaia RSA, where the club holds its fortnightly meetings, for raffling, raising $1775.50 for a very worthwhile cause.

"The helicopter service in Northland is our lifeline to Whangarei," club president Andrea Thomas said. "Last year alone more than 1000 rescues took place. Each mission can cost thousands of dollars, and involves a mix of ambulance and search and rescue work. Through Sam the club was able to raise awareness of the vital importance of the helicopter service in our region."

The day was about more than fundraising though.

The entertainment began at 11am with club members and visitors taking the stage to perform with the band, followed by a delicious lunch to which members and friends of the club contributed, served by the club's catering manager, Gillian Lovell, and her helpers.

The afternoon featured a recital by the club's ukulele group, led by tutor Barry McIvor.

The group comprises "Young Guns" Neve and Cora Hobson-Scott and "Silver Bullets" Mary Lisle, Llona McIvor and Karen Hinchco.

Then it was time for "Stars in Your Eyes", members and visitors taking up the challenge of impersonating their chosen artists. No fewer than 19 performers entertained and amused the crowd, the line-up including John and June Carter Cash, Elvis Presley, Merle Haggard, Ricky Van Shelton, The Beatles, Patsy Cline, Reba McEntire and Dolly Parton.

The younger generation did their bit too, as The Monkees, Johnny Cash, and two young ladies who contributed a very entertaining Cup Song act called "You're Gonna Miss Me".

"Jennifer Hobson did a brilliant job as stage manager, as did the judges, Tipu Campbell and Dennis Collins," Andrea said.

"Special thanks to Clive Crombie, who did all the photography on the day, and who gave so generously of his time.

"The day finished with the band jamming (Dave Cook on keyboard, Barry McIvor rhythm, Janie Ryan bass, Dion Hobson lead and Trevor Curreen pedal steel).

"Members, friends and visitors taking the dance floor to finish a very successful fundraiser and first birthday celebration for the Far North Country Music and Variety Club."

The club wished to thank the sponsors and members who helped make the fundraiser so successful.
