Historians are hoping to capture first hand accounts from survivors of a rugby team from 1949

Historians are hoping to capture first hand accounts from survivors of a rugby team from 1949

A couple of local rugby historians are keen to hear from any surviving members of the Far North Rugby Football Club team of 1949.

Aggie Smith happened across the accompanying image of the team and was keen to hear from anyone who knows if any of the players are still alive.

If not, it will be put on display as an archive on the wall at Waimanoni Marae, she said.
For the record, the legend on the accompanying image of the Far North Rugby Football Club noted the senior team from 1949 were winners of the Bell Shield, and the Mangonui Rugby Union seven-a-side tournament, winning all 12 matches played that year.

Back row: H Manuera (club delegate and coach), J Wiki, T Wiki, H Nopera, D Frost, R Conrad, L Frost, L Pene (manager and selector); front row: H Blucher, J Katavich, A Blucher (vice captain), J Murray (captain), P Nopera, T N Wiki, C Sutherland; in front: P Paraone, P Karena; absent are T Henry, E Wells, S Urlich and J Pene.
