GO YOU GOOD THING: Mangonui Lions player Steve O'Connor watching the progress of his strike.

GO YOU GOOD THING: Mangonui Lions player Steve O'Connor watching the progress of his strike.

The latest report from the Doubtless Bay Croquet Club noted the weather for last Thursday's business house tournament was a marked improvement on that experienced the previous week.

Club correspondent Peter Hartnall noted games went ahead under glorious warm sunny conditions and those who turned up for the second week could play under conditions in which croquet could "really be enjoyed."

He went on to note that while players could generally no longer be regarded as total novices as it was their second week, some appeared keen to get more adventurous resulting in a number of amusing incidents on the night.

"For example one player tried a jump shot but finished remodelling the turf instead, another tried a jump shot and keeping the mallet well clear of the turf, swung energetically and missed the ball entirely while another, upon being urged to hit the ball really firmly, did just that. But her aim was far from perfect resulting her having to walk a long way to retrieve her ball. Undeterred, she tried again from the far end of the green with the same result and ended up having to now walk the full length of the green in the opposite direction. At least she had plenty of healthy exercise!" Hartnall said, adding the outcome of the series of various incidents was lots of good-natured laughter.

"Just like last week players were determined to 'have a go', learned a lot in the process, and had a good time too."
