Emergency services are responding to the serious crash on State Highway 1 in Hikurangi. Photo / File

A pedestrian has died after being hit by a car in Hikurangi, north of Whangārei.

The crash took place about 6.40pm on State Highway 1, near George St.

Police and emergency teams were at the site and say the road will remain closed for some time. Diversions are in place.

Motorists were asked to avoid the area if possible.
