Hihi/Taupo Bay firefighters converged on the fire station on Saturday, but it wasn't the usual mad dash in response to an alarm.

They were there for lunch, and to receive annual service honours, including a 14-year medal for Denis Robinson, who has now retired.

Principal Rural Fire Officer Myles Taylor presented the medal on behalf of Fire and Emergency NZ and the Region 1 area executive, and certificates to others for service under the Northland Rural Fire Authority.

"Fire forces have a long tradition of supporting their communities, and it is always extremely pleasing to recognise individuals for their contribution," Mr Taylor said.

"Fire and Emergency, the community and the country owe a debt of gratitude to all volunteers, and it is appropriate that an award is presented under the New Zealand honours system for outstanding commitment. This is a very special and important award, and is only given to the most deserving recipients."

Four new awards were initiated in 1975 to recognise long service and good conduct in the military, police, fire and prison services, he said, the New Zealand Fire Brigade long service and good conduct medal being awarded to operational members after 14 years' service, if warranted by the member's conduct.

Mr Taylor said he considered it a privilege to present Mr Robinson's medal, Mr Robinson saying it was now up to his family now to take over.

"There are three generations of Robinsons in the brigade, and I am very proud of this too," he said.

The Taupo Bay Fire Party was established in the 1990s, when one of the locals found room in his garage for a small 'smoke chaser'. Other members of the community saw the need too, and it wasn't long before Mr Robinson joined them.

He obtained funding to build the fire station on Taupo Bay Rd, now home to a number of appliances and part of a network throughout the North.

Saturday's function saw all current members receive certificates of appreciation for service to their community under the umbrella of the Northland Rural Fire Authority 1993-2017.
