Submissions to the Northland Regional Council's proposed new rules aimed at preventing the spread of marine pests, harbour safety and paying for marine biosecurity close at 4pm tomorrow.

About 100 submissions had been received as of last week.

Council chairman Bill Shepherd said, as expected, the proposal for a boat-focused, user pays-type charge as a potentially fairer way to cover the costs of a programme to stop the spread of marine pests had attracted a great deal of interest, and comment, from boaties in particular.

"I strongly urge anyone who hasn't already done so to familiarise themselves with the many issues being consulted on and consider making a submission to let us know what they think," he said.

The relevant documents, and a comprehensive range of supporting information, were available at www.nrc.govt.nz/haveyoursay

Cr Shepherd said the three documents traversed a wide range of subjects, and the council was keen to ensure that its final decisions were made from the most informed position possible.
