A large search is under way along a Northland beach for a man who has been missing for three days.

Specialist police search and rescue teams, Coastguard and surf lifeguards are scouring Ahipara Beach for the 62-year-old man who was reported missing on Saturday.

Senior Sergeant Cliff Metcalf said he was last seen in the Shipwreck Bay area.

Police have been conducting extensive inquiries since Saturday but the man, described as a local to the area, had not been seen.
