A 54-year-old has died after being struck by a car while sitting on a bench in Kaitaia this morning.

A police spokeswoman told the Herald the man died on Commerce St in the Northland town about 1am.

A 20-year-old man will appear in the Kaitaia District Court this afternoon charged with driving with excess breath alcohol causing death.
