SHINING REWARD: Julie Yates and Mary Williams were presented with silver salvers for winning the Nancy MacCormick Memorial at Waipu on Saturday.

SHINING REWARD: Julie Yates and Mary Williams were presented with silver salvers for winning the Nancy MacCormick Memorial at Waipu on Saturday.

A pair of Kaitaia golfing ladies have been recognised after confirming their place among the nation's best club golfers by carding impressive results in the Nancy MacCormick Memorial foursomes tournament in early March.

Mary Williams and Julie Yates, as the club winners of the Srixon 36-hole competition with scores of 62 and 64 nett respectively, were presented with their silver salvers, together with gifts from the sponsors, at the Northland Champ of Champs event at Waipu on Saturday.

The Kaitaia ladies' result came from a district-wide event which was held in Northern Wairoa. Playing for the best nett score, the Kaitaia pair beat out pretty much every club around Northland and New Zealand, the first time the Kaitaia club has held the distinction.

Nancy MacCormick was appointed secretary of the NZLGU in 1932 and remained in that office until her death in 1952. In 1953 silver salvers were purchased to commemorate her long years of service and so began the Nancy MacCormick Foursomes, a home links (national event) competition.

Masters at Paihia Rain interrupted proceedings and caused play to be halted as the major event, the 2014 Diners Club Freyberg Masters, got under way at the Waitangi Golf Club yesterday morning.

The event is due to run until this Friday and is being contested by 15 teams of five players each, representing New Zealand's 15 golfing districts.

The Northland team is Saali Herewini No 1, Peter Bone 2, Bob Shirley (Kaitaia/ Carrington GC) 3, Scott Wilson (Kerikeri) 4 and Ian Power 5.

The tourney was established in 1986 and Northland last won the title in 1998. The provincial team nearly won last year but blew their final round at Coringa Golf Club in Christchurch, allowing Bay of Plenty to take the title. An event update will feature in Thursday's edition.
