Chances go begging

I write to say how wonderful it was to see the six Kaitaia swimmers featured in The Northland Age. How many more champions could there have been had we a tepid pool in town? To my knowledge we have been asking for over 30 years for such an aquatic centre.

Slap bang in the middle of our town we now have a building that would house a racing pool, a diving pool, children's pools, changing rooms, family rooms, a cafe and a flying fox.

The little town of Tokoroa has led the way for years with such a facility, where hundreds of children gain aquatic skills every day and have somewhere to go and have fun.

On enquiring re the old Pak'nSave building I'm told it wouldn't do, because it wasn't purpose-built. It does not hurt to dream though. Wouldn't it be great?

In a recent Northland Age I read Kerikeri is planning just such a complex. I will watch with interest. Will it take 30 years?

Please don't throw the old chestnut at me about Juken NZ's offer of steam to heat a pool. If and when we achieve this worthwhile goal of a heated pool it has to be in town.
