Trashing Te Hiku

Once again this morning headed off to the tip with recycling bin, once again stopped at the corner (SH10/Inland Road) to pick up the cans and bottles etc tossed from vehicles. Thought, it's better than usual, but then looked in the drain behind the garden; a disgusting mess of bottles, nappies (disposable?), softdrink bottles and takeaway food containers etc.

How totally brainless you low-life trash-heads really are. The next rain and it will all wash into the creek and then out into the bay at Aurere. As if the sea life needs any more plastic in the foodchain.

I cleaned up and sorted for recycling/dumping at my own expense, and then carried on along the road. Within 150 metres I'd filled two bags with the same sort of garbage. I could have easily filled more in a very short time if I'd had them.

Come on people, this isn't good enough. Let's commence a war on roadside trash. Perhaps the council, along with community boards, can initiate a programme of stopping trashing our region. Perhaps getting schools on board with a competition to design anti-litter signs such as 'Take some pride in where you live,' 'Welcome to the Far North,' 'Trash-Free Zone' etc, and place these along the highways. Could make a small difference.

Perhaps instant fines for any offenders seen dumping and an 0800 number for reporting them. Let's get proactive and try and clean up our countryside. If anyone else has suggestions, please feel free to contribute.

I have not noticed the good guys from Fulton Hogan/Recreational Services picking up and bagging roadside waste lately. Is this something that has gone with the new waste contracts?

What about organising those sentenced to community service into gangs of trash collectors? And young, rifle-toting lolly bandits might enjoy some fresh air in their polluted brain cells too. A few sets of stocks included in the upgrade of the Memorial Park in town might be good idea.

Oh, and fast food outlets, what about biodegradable packaging and soft drink containers? Just being recyclable doesn't work if they don't make the recycling stations.
