Every few years there is a boisterous campaign to change our national flag. First it was a red one, then a green one with spots, then a black one with a silver fern, and now back to a red one, which the Prime Minister likes.
Some, including ex-Governor-GeneralDame Catherine Tizard, say it is too easily confused with the Australian flag.
All I can say to this is they must be easily confused, and that I don't know of any Australians who want to change their flag for the same reason, or at all.
This time it seems Mr Key is deadly serious, and is going to spend $20 million designing a new one. Mr Winston Peters rightly calls this an unnecessary distraction. Not to mention the cost.
What will happen if the flag-haters get their way and in another few years think they want to change it again? Like the Queen said about Scottish referendum, people should think very carefully about this.
