Recycling assurance

We note the letter received from 'A Very Concerned Resident' regarding the recycling service provided by our Company Northland Waste Ltd. The anonymous letter alleges that Northland Waste were deliberately mixing recycling with refuse.

We can provide an assurance that no staff have been instructed or encouraged to ever mix recyclables. Our company is aware that previous recyclers in Kaitaia got into the practice of collecting material from clients only to later landfill it when they discovered that no market existed or the material was too contaminated. Our company is not prepared to operate in this manner.

Where recyclable material is un-saleable, or has been contaminated with refuse, our approach will be to advise our clients that this material cannot be recycled and must be treated as refuse. Our company is also pleased to advise that the refuse volume deposited to landfill, under the contract, for the first month of Northland Waste assuming control, was in fact 20 per cent lower than the same period last year. Furthermore the contract has been carried out at a price 40 per cent lower than the previous contractor tendered. This should surely put any concerned residents' mind at ease.
