The last of his kind

We had hoped to have the opportunity to pay tribute to Tom (Young) at the time of his funeral service - this letter is offered in lieu of that eulogy.

Tom was a wonderful friend, patron, benefactor and colleague to us all. He was the last of the true cradle-to-grave family physicians to serve our community. His total dedication to, enthusiasm for and love of his job were legendary.

Our community has been blessed over the years by some amazing doctors and Tom was right up there with the best, much loved by all those whose lives he touched in so many ways.

To his medical colleagues he was an inspiration, a true role model, a gifted, intuitive, empathetic and skilled practitioner. To the staff at KHC he was our patriarch, caring employer and good friend.

It was a true privilege to work alongside him over the years.

Tom was always available for us, even after leaving the practice, providing sound advice or support when needed, sharing his wisdom or just having a yarn. We all bore the brunt of his wicked sense of humour, and loved him all the more for it.

Tom had a talent for recognising strengths, talent and potential in those whom he met. Many flourishing careers have evolved through his insight and encouragement.

Despite a very demanding working life Tom never stopped caring. He had the enthusiasm and resilience to withstand the pressures of his work and still be there for Judy, his boys and their families.

Tom's passing leaves an enormous void in our community. His stature, selfless contribution and simple humanity are unlikely to be matched in the future.

We will always remember Tom with great fondness and respect. Our thoughts are with his family during this very difficult time.
