I seem to remember a couple of years back an ambulance driver was convicted of speeding while on the way to an accident; unfortunately he had one himself. The judge made it quite clear that road rules were there for a reason, and in a built-up area itdidn't matter who you were, speeding was dangerous.
The ambulance driver lost his licence, and probably his job.
I was standing in the bank, on I think Friday 25, when a police car came flying through town, sirens screaming, going way over the speed limit. Anyone who got in his way wouldn't have stood a chance. To make it worse there was nowhere for him to go to avoid an accident, cars parked on both sides of the road. Lots of folk just walking around. It would have been one hell of a mess.
Why not take another route out of town, Puckey Ave, Matthews Ave? Why the main street? Talk about tempting fate.
Most of all, why can the police speed in a built-up area and no one else in an emergency service can? Maybe they have the right to, but down the main street?
