Kahu Rangi appeared in Kaitāia District Court facing three charges.

A man allegedly more than twice the legal alcohol limit while driving has been charged with causing the death of his passenger following a crash in the Far North.

Kahu Rangi appeared in the Kaitāia District Court on Friday, where he faced three charges that included causing the death of 27-year-old Ngaiwa Miru, of Kaitāia.

Miru died in a single vehicle crash on Allen Bell Drive, in his hometown, on July 11 about 2am.

Police confirmed he had been a passenger in the vehicle and had died at the scene. Two others were taken to hospital with moderate to serious injuries.

Rangi has also been charged with causing injury to another passenger and driving while disqualified from obtaining a driver’s licence.

He was remanded on bail until September 9, where he will appear before a judge for a plea and legal aid to be assigned.

The first charge Rangi faces carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine. While the second carries up to five years in prison and a $20,000 fine. He also faces up to two years in prison and a $6000 fine for driving while disqualified.
