Kaitaia Intermediate cooks up cupcakes for SPCA

The SPCA in Kaitaia is about to receive a bag of cash, thanks to the school holiday efforts of 12-year-old Kaitaia Intermediate School pupil Indianna Foster.

She and schoolmate Tyra Morphette were hard at work yesterday icing another 203 cupcakes, having already turned out 170-odd in the family kitchen at Lake Ngatu for customers including Paparore School, just across the lake, friends and family and businesses in Kaitaia.

Even for a youngster with a soft spot for animals, this was a massive effort, Indi's mum Rachael Foster said.

Who would be doing the dishes, and mopping the somewhat sticky kitchen floor, had not been resolved yesterday, but she was a very proud mum.

The process had been made a little easier by dipping into ready-to-use sponge mix, but icing some 300 cupcakes was a mission, and wouldn't leave much at the bottom of a 12.5kg bag of icing sugar.

Icing included blueberry, chocolate, lime, cookies and cream, while each cake was topped with a chocolate paw print or bone.

The process began by making posters and soliciting orders, with the results of a school holiday very well spent due to be delivered to the SPCA later this week.
