"They are brilliant!" one man laughed behind me as the crowd giggled and hollered at the hilarious performance from the Year 12 drama group, 'The Amazing Adventures of Perseus and Pegasus,' just one of many spectacular performances at the Performing Arts Evening 2012 in the Kaitaia College hall.

The hall was packed as parents, grandparents, teachers and students gathered to watch their friends and family perform. The night included a variety of acts showcasing powerful vocals, confident acting skills, integrated dance, Maori performing arts and a couple of sassy upbeat dance numbers interwoven through the night.

MC's Manu Allen and Kelly Davis introduced each act articulately and fluently.

Senior student Brooke Larkin choreographed a dance called 'Ritual,' an emotional look into arranged marriage and sacred Indian rituals. Dancing in this piece was Reina Subritzky, who was expressive in her movements and had the crowd in awe of her ability. Zoe Lockie and Charlie Pukeroa also proved they had immense ability as they successfully helped in the portrayal of the story.

A new area at Kaitaia College that is rapidly developing is Maori performing arts. The group that performed on the night did the school proud, giving the evening a dramatic start, the audience erupting into applause even before the curtains could be drawn. It was such a night of pure talent.

Jessica Wilson-Hynes sang a beautiful rendition of 'If I Ain't Got You' by Alicia Keys; she also had members of the audience muttering 'wow,' and commenting on how talented a singer she truly is.

Duncan Bakke and Priscilla Jane DeGroen Hutchinson acted out Henry V, Act 5 Scene 2, a piece that they performed amazingly and that has taken them far competition-wise.

The night ended wonderfully, the audience commenting on how much talent Kaitaia College students possess, while the students appreciated the wide range of support from family, friends and the general audience, support they hope will carry through to the Fabulous Fairy Tale Adventures which will staged in the college hall on October 26. The show begins at 6:30pm, admission $5 but only $2 for those who arrive in costume. Dress up and show your support!
