Kaikohe School has been forced to close this morning and hundreds of homes are without water, after a major water main burst in the town.

The Far North District Council says contractors are on site and urgently working to find the cause and have water restored as soon as possible.

They hope to have the water back on around noon or 1pm.

The burst water main is affecting water supplies to Bisset Rd, Broadway, Clifford St, Dickeson St, De Merle St, Fuller, Place, Harold Ave, Heke St, Hillcrest Rd, Hongi St, Monument Rd, Omapere Rd, Orrs Rd, Ripi St, Routley Ave, Rowsell Heights, Shaw St, Sydney St, Taheke Rd, Taraire St, Tawanui Rd, Te Ra Place, Tuhuna Rd, Tui St, Williams Ave.

In a message to parents Kaikohe East School said it could not operate safely without running water for toilets and drinking, and asked caregivers to collect students.

Children will still be marked present for the day.

“Health and safety requires that we have running water at school for toilets and drinking water. As we can not meet this requirement at this time we are closing because of health and safety concerns.”

Council has apologised for the disruption and says updates will be provided as work continues.

“Contractors are on site. We apologise for the inconvenience this break will cause residents.”
